Redefining Newness: The Ræjuvenate SS21 Collection by Ræburn

Founded by Christopher Ræburn in 2009, Ræburn Design is an inventive men’s and womenswear brand based in East London, with an eye for repurposing utilitarian textiles into streetwear at sustainable quantities.

Ræburn’s brand ethos focuses on repurposing textiles produced in surplus and collaborating on every collection to create new pieces each time. These efforts began with using de-commissioned military materials in Ræburn’s very first collection in 2009, and the effort to reclaim discarded materials has lived on ever since.

The RÆBURN Men's Air Brake Anorak has been RÆMADE using original Air Brake Parachutes (also known as Drogue parachutes) which have been over-dyed in the UK. Air Brake Parachutes are designed for deployment from a rapidly-moving objects to decrease speed, provide control and stability, or as a pilot parachute to deploy larger parachutes and used by aircraft, and spacecraft recovery systems. These items have been meticulously deconstructed and reconstructed at the RÆBURN Lab in East London to deliver this series of reimagined outerwear.

The Ræjuvenate Summer 2021 collection is no exception to Ræburn’s intent to repurpose textiles into stunning, unique garments. They are “Redefining Newness” with this collection by reclaiming some already re-purposed textiles from past seasons’ stock and creating innovative designs for the future.

The Ræjuvenate Collection was made in accordance with their April 2020 Ræstart Manifesto, with the intent of optimising their current material stock to fit with the strange times of 2020. Much of the material used for the collection was revived from a range of US military wet-weather poncho liners, traditionally used in the field as multipurpose shelter and weather protection. All printed in Digital ACU camo, the result is stunning outerwear made to last a lifetime.

The Men’s Reversible ACU Jacket is a reversible style with straight cuff finish, RÆMADE from genuine issue RAF two-in one reversible Gore-Tex MVP and Hi-Vis PTFE Jackets. We combined the Gore-Tex shell with contrast ACU Digicam ripstop tarpaulin, the latter of which originates from US military wet-weather quilt poncho liners in Universal Digital (ACU) camo. These are traditionally utilised as a versatile bit of equipment in the field, whether as insulation blankets or shelter. The outer is made from a lightweight and quick-drying ripstop nylon, and is quilted for added strength and durability. All original garments have been meticulously deconstructed and reconstructed at the RÆBURN Lab in East London.

Other pieces in the collection were created with the intent of reusing previous Ræburn designs, and collaborating with AATB, exploring Human-Machine interaction with the use of kinetic and interactive robots. Reclaiming the Ræduced 100% Organic Cotton Interlock T-Shirts, Ræburn designed a collection of tops and jackets; each design individually printed, and therefore unique to one another.

The collection also includes unique accessories made from the same re-claimed wet-weather military textiles. The pieces contrast between re-purposed, weathered, camouflage, and high visibility neon yellow.

Ræburn Design makes their commitment to sustainable streetwear by using entirely green technologies and adhering to a “Ræmade, Ræduced, Ræcycled” philosophy. Ræmade aims to make use of materials produced in surplus, to extend their lifetime by creating a unique Redefined Newness. Ræduced defines their promise to minimize their carbon footprint, manufacture locally to the London design lab, and never produce pieces in excess. This creates a brand defined by limited edition collections, always innovating and collaborating on new ideas. Ræcycled defines their intent to use the most sustainable materials possible, specifically with pre-existing materials that can be brought back to life in their collections.

The ACU Hi-Vis Shark Bag is our popular mascot silhouette reimagined in our seasonal RÆMADE highlights of ACU digicam with accents of Hi-vis fluro yellow. Repurposing genuine issue RAF two-in one reversible Jackets and original US military wet-weather quilt poncho liners, each has been meticulously deconstructed and reconstructed at the RÆBURN Lab in East London. The top body has a central zip compartment large enough to hold small goods and accessories, and is fully lined in organic cotton.

Ræburn Design’s stunning commitment to sustainability and ethical design shines through every collection they release, with the Ræjuvenated Collection being no exception. Collaboration and innovation come easily to this brand, making them a great team to support. Find the Ræjuvenated Collection at www.raeburndesign.co.uk.
